Enterprise Gateway Council Discusses Employment Law At September Meeting

The Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce’s Enterprise Gateway Council will discuss employment law at its monthly meeting Sept. 27. 

The meeting, sponsored by Bank & Business Solutions, will take place from 8:30 – 9:30 a.

m. at Hospice of Chattanooga, located at 4411 Oakwood Drive. Attendees are invited to come early and stay late for networking. The Enterprise Gateway Council’s featured business of the month will be BI-LO - Highway 58. 

Maury Nicely, an attorney with Evans Harrison Hackett, PLLC, will deliver the keynote presentation. The discussion is titled, “As Our Business Grows: What Employment Laws Apply to Me?” and will cover the following points of interest:   How federal and state laws apply to employers; Employment laws as they apply to various stages of business growth 

Over the past 15 years, Mr. Nicely has represented business clients in the areas of labor and employment laws and litigation.  He provides ongoing training and legal advice for a wide range of employers, from small start-up businesses to established, multi-national companies for the purpose of preventing legal conflicts in the workplace. Nicely previously served as in-house labor and employment counsel for Volkswagen Chattanooga.  

 “Any employer, no matter the size of the business, can benefit from taking a concentrated look at how employment laws apply across the many stages of growth,” said Enterprise Gateway Council President David Hawke. “We expect guests at this meeting to gain valuable knowledge about how they can prevent unexpected legal problems in the workplace.”

Mr. Nicely is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Georgia School of Law and practices law in both Tennessee and Georgia. He is passionate about history and has written books on the Chattanooga Walking and Historic Guide as well as the East Tennessee Walking Tour and Historic guide, and he is also the current board chair of the Chattanooga History Center.

The Enterprise Gateway Council meetings, which take place the fourth Thursday of each month, are open to Chattanooga Chamber members and non-members. The meetings cost $10 for members and non-members. A light breakfast is provided.
