Lee University hosted the second annual Constitution Quiz Bowl, bringing to campus five local high schools in recognition of Constitution Day. The quiz bowl was sponsored by Lee’s chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honors Society.
Participating high schools in the quiz bowl included teams from Bradley Central, Walker Valley, Tennessee Christian Preparatory, McCallie, and Cleveland High. Each high school team participated in multiple quiz rounds with questions pulled from the U.S. Constitution, the Amendments, and the Federalist Papers.
“The Constitution Bowl is an opportunity for high school students in the area to come and show off their constitutional knowledge,” said Anna Swick, president of Pi Sigma Alpha at Lee. “We had a good turnout in terms of numbers as well as depth of knowledge.”
In the weeks leading up to the quiz bowl, the political science department recruited Lee students to help volunteer with the planning and execution of the event.
For the final round, Bradley’s team faced off against last year’s runners-up, Cleveland High. Bradley’s squad emerged victorious with a 5 point win over Cleveland. Bradley was coached by Penny Howell, and students on the winning team were Logan Fetzner, Jay Fitzsimmons, Devin Kersey, and Riley Shul.
Ms. Swick added, “Both competitors in the final round were very well prepared, and it was a close call with Bradley winning.”
Recognition of Constitution Day on Sept. 17, the signing date of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, is mandatory for all educational institutions to receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Education.
