Friday, September 21, 2012
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to Davidson Friday night at Alumni Stadium in the Southern Conference opener for both teams. The Mocs fall to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1 in league action while the Wildcats improve to 3-4-2 overall and 1-0 in SoCon play.

“It was a good game against a good Davidson team,” UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer said. “It was a back-and-forth game until about the 20th minute when we lost one of our players. We had to move some players around.”

Davidson outshot the Mocs 25-9 with 12 shots on goal to UTC’s four. Davidson’s Dani Johnson picked up a loose ball in the box off a corner kick in the 27th minute to put the Wildcats on the board. Davidson got off three more shots before the half with Chattanooga’s Lauren Thomas nabbing two saves. The two teams went into the break with the Wildcats holding a one-goal lead.

The Wildcats’ second goal also came off a loose ball from a corner kick. Rachel Newmister, scoring her second goal of the year, scored unassisted at the 50:42 mark of the game to put Davidson up 2-0. Kelsey Krueger scored the final goal for the Wildcats, assisted by Julia Singley in the 64th minute on a cross from the far side.

Senior Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and sophomore Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) each had three shots for the Mocs with freshman Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) adding a pair. Thomas had nine saves on the night.

“We’ll regroup and be ready for Georgia Southern on Sunday,” Kyzer said.

The Mocs return to action Sunday afternoon at Georgia Southern. Live stats and streaming video will be available for the game on the Mocs Soccer schedule page. The game is set to kick off at 2 p.m.
