Lee Finishes 13th In Yale Golf Collegiate

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Lee women's golf coach John Maupin would be the first to admit that he would have loved to have seen his team place higher than 13th in the Yale University Fall Collegiate, but he is willing to chalk the 54-hole event up as the expereince of a lifetime for his club.

"It wasn't exactly what we wanted today," said Maupin as his Lady Flames waited to board the plane and head back toward the Lee campus on Sunday evening, "But I definitely think we can take away some things to work on from this one.

I think the physical and mental fatigue took a tole today. "It was our fourth round, and it was a difficult course to walk. That is a good thing though, as we need to go through that in preparation for future events. That is one reason we came up here."

Nova Southeastern (Fla.) led the entire 54 holes, and paced by the tourney's top three golfers claimed the team title (859). Penn State was second (885), Harvard third (886) while host Yale and Seton Hall tied for fourth (909). Daniela Ortiz, who fired back-to-back rounds of 67 was medalist (207).

Lee sophomore Madison Alexander turned in a 77 on Sunday and drew praise from Maupin. "Madison gave us a great round today, especially in the windy conditions. I was really proud of her for finishing off the tournament well." Alexander totaled a 243 over the 54 holes.

Courtney Shelton slipped to an 80 on the final day but was still best overall for the Lady Flames (231). Sloane Skinner's 83 gave her a 246 tally. Bernadette Little came in with an 85 and a three-day total of 247, while Chelsa Rakestraw posted an 88 and finished at 265.

"As a team we are playing a lot of good holes," added Maupin. "We just need to work on tightening some things up, and avoiding the big numbers. We have a couple weeks until our next one, so we'll now look forward to preparing for that one. This was such a well-run event, and we want to thank Yale University for hosting us."

Randy Smith: The New SoCon: It Is What It Is

About 10 years ago I first heard the phrase, “It is what it is.” I believe it was former Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen who used it a lot, especially when talking about a Volunteer loss. Obviously, he wasn’t the first person to use it, and he certainly won’t be the last. I believe it means, “don’t put too much into it. Or don’t place too much emphasis on it”; whatever ... Who's Driving The Bessie Smith Strut Into The Ground?

As the annual Riverbend Festival has come to a close I seem to be at odds with one particular thing and no it has nothing to do with seeing CeeLo’s rear-end. That one thing is the Bessie Smith Strut and the lack of what it used to be. It is just my opinion but there seems to be a driving force of setting the event up for failure and for what?    The event survived a ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Me & The Ficus Benjamina

I got back from my two-week vacation at the Mayo Clinic "spa" late Saturday night and spent most of the day in the bed yesterday, nursing my way through the latest round of infections. All day long I was pretty miserable and, as I am wont to do with things turn downwards, look for something funny to ease my pain and anguish. So the Lord reminded me of my famous bout ...
