Notre Dame, Signal Mtn Claim District 7 Golf Titles

Irish Boys, SM Girls Are Repeat Winners

Monday, September 24, 2012 - by B.B. Branton

Notre Dame senior Will Armor shot a career-best 67 to lead the Irish to their fifth straight A/AA district boys' golf title Monday at Brainerd Golf Course.

Armor, who claimed medalist honors on the boys' side, had seven birdies and two bogies on the way to the 5-under 67 and Notre Dame needed everyone of those birdies to beat Signal Mountain 316-317, for the District 7 crown, while Marion County was third (364).

How appropriate that Armor shot a career low in his final high school match on Notre Dame's home course (Brainerd).

On the girls' side, Hayley Davidson took medalist honors (79) and led Signal Mountain to its fourth straight district championship with a team total of 163, while Chattanooga Christian was second (189) and Richard Hardy was third (227).

Advancing to Region 4 Tourney - The top three teams and the top five individuals (not on one of the top three teams) in each district advance to the region tournament next Monday. Only the region team champions (8 regions) advance to the state championship, Oct. 9-10 in Manchester.

District 7 A/AA  Boys ... Notre Dame has now won five straight district titles as Will and his twin brother, Patrict Armor, were in the seventh grade at St. Jude (2007) the last time an Irish team failed to win the district.  Hixson won the district in 2007 (Notre Dame was second and CCS was third), but Chattanooga Christian won the region.

The next four years belonged to Notre Dame with district and region crowns each time out and a state championship in 2011 capping a team finish of 4-3-2-1 at the state from 2008-2011.

Playoff For Third: Marion County edged Chattanooga Christian by one shot in a one hole playoff for third place and the final spot in the Region 4 tourney Monday at Bear Trace in Harrison.

Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
