Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a free walking tour on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 5 pm. Led by Park Historian Jim Ogden the ninety-minute, mile-and-a-half, moderate difficulty walk will explore the Civil War Union artillery earthwork complex on the southern end of Stringer’s Ridge on Moccasin Bend. The walk will begin near the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute entrance on Moccasin Bend Road. Special Event signs will direct you to the parking area.
Cannon in these positions helped keep the Confederates at bay during the Siege of Chattanooga in the fall 149 years ago and then helped drive them from Lookout Mountain during the “Battle Above the Clouds” on a rainy Nov. 24, 1863. Comfortable, supportive footwear, clothing appropriate for the weather, and water are recommended for this program.
