Human rights activist Jose’ “Chencho” Alas will serve as a special guest speaker to the McCallie Upper School Friday at 9:50 a.m. Sr. Alas will speak to his McCallie audience about making a difference in one’s community and in the world.
Sr. Alas is founder of the Foundation for Self-Sufficiency in Central America, an organization inspired by the assassination in 1980 of El Salvador Archbishop Oscar Romero. The Foundation recently changed its name to EcoViva.
His vision is to lead low-income communities in Central America to peace, social justice and economic self-sufficiency by training individuals in conflict resolution, leadership and civic engagement, organic and sustainable agriculture, fair trade and commerce and natural medicine.
The event is free and open to the public and will take place in the McCallie Chapel. For more information, please contact McCallie’s Public Affairs office at 493-5716.
