Family Canoeing at Greenway Farm Sept. 27  
Before the Fireside program this Thurs., bring the family to canoe N. Chickamauga Creek on from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Outdoor Chattanooga will provide canoes, paddles and life jackets at the farm's south launch for people to use on the creek. Cost is $8. Cash or check only. All equipment and staff supervision will be provided. Life jackets are sized for adults and kids ages 5 and older. Children younger than age 5 should have their own life jackets. Family Campout (and Cookout) at Greenway Farm Sept. 29 & 30  
Try family camping at Greenway Farm with Outdoor Chattanooga's experienced staff on Sat. and Sun., Sept. 29 and 30.Learn about everything from pitching a tent to cooking breakfast and keeping the kids entertained. Cost is $15 per person and includes dinner, breakfast and all activities. Some tents and sleeping pads are available to borrow. Reservations required. Public Presentation on C&O Canal National Park Oct. 1  
The Chattanooga Hiking Club and Outdoor Chattanooga will host a public presentation about the C&O Canal National Park and towpath on Mon., Oct. 1, 6:30 p.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St. in Coolidge Park. Presenter Hank Smith will talk about the history of the trail and the logistics necessary to hike or bike all or a portion of the 184 mile linear park. Rapid Learning Moves Indoors to UTC Oct. 2  
Outdoor Chattanooga's Rapid Learning Whitewater Program will move our weekly kayak roll practice indoors to the UTC Maclellan Gym pool, beginning Tues., Oct. 2. We're outdoors at Chester Frost County Park on Sept. 18 and 25.Two sessions: 5:30 to 7 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Participants can come for either session, first come, first served. As always, members of the public who want to try the program may visit the first time for free. After that, membership is $50 per year for individuals, $75 for adults. Free Bluffs and Bridges Walking Tour Oct. 3  
Chattanooga Sidewalk Tours will partner with Outdoor Chattanooga on a free, guided history walk of downtown Chattanooga's Walnut St. Bridge and the Bluff View Arts District on Wed., Oct. 3, 6 p.m., beginning at our facility in Coolidge Park. Professional guides will share special stories about how Chattanooga has developed into a dynamic and charming city. Reservations required. Bike2Work Oct. 5  Chattanooga's bicycle commuters celebrate pedaling to work and school at Bike2Work on Fri., Oct. 5, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Waterhouse Pavilion in Miller Plaza. Come meet the people who are bicycle commuting and learn how you can get started. Light Your Bike Family Bicycle Ride Oct. 10
Pull out the battery powered holiday lights, glow sticks, blinkies and other lights for our Light Your Bike Family Bicycle Ride on Wed., Oct. 10, 6 p.m., beginning at Outdoor Chattanooga in Coolidge Park. We'll ride through the park and across the river with City of Chattanooga Police escort. Don't miss this very special chance to bicycle through downtown Chattanooga with the whole family. No kids tricycles, push bikes or training wheels please. BOB trailers, tagalongs and kid seats are encouraged for kids eight and under. Volkswagen Conservancy Tour w/ Chattanooga Audubon Sept. 29  
The Chattanooga Audubon Society will host a behind the scenes tour of the conservation areas around the Chattanooga Volkswagen manufacturing plant on Sat., Sept. 29 at 7:30 a.m. Participants will get a tour of wetland and grassland habitats and have an opportunity to view wildlife in an area that is off limits to the public. Reservations are required and space is limited. Call (423) 892-3690 to reserve or learn more.  Cost is $10 for the general public or $5 for members of Chattanooga Audubon Society.

Tennessee River Rescue Oct. 6 
It's not too late to join in on Chattanooga's biggest river cleanup, the 24th annual Tennessee River Rescue on Sat., Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Teams, troops, church groups and caring individuals can help clean up the river's watershed at nearly two dozen events.     
 
Sequatchie Valley Century Oct. 6  
The Chattanooga Bicycle Club will host their fall century ride, the Sequatchie Valley Century, on Sat., Oct. 6. Ride 28, 62, 90 or 100 fully supported miles through this amazing valley. Registration is still open.     
 
Browns Ferry, Cherokee Removal, & "Cracker Line" Walking Tour Oct. 6
The public is invited to join an historical walking tour of Brown's Ferry, the Cherokee Removal and "Cracker Line" on Sat., Oct. 6, 9:30 a.m. on Moccasin Bend. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Historian Jim Ogden will host this 2.5 mile walk, beginning at the Chattanooga Bakery parking lot, 900 Manufacturer's Rd. Floatilla Oct. 7  
Paddle what you got, as long as it floats, during the Floatila community float on Sun., Oct. 7, beginning at 11:00 a.m., at the City of Chattanooga's Rivermont Park. Hosted by Outdoor Adventure Rafting, the event will offer prizes for the most unique, best decorated and most challenged boat. Preregistration is $18 per person, $25 the day of the float.    
 
Moccasin Bend Civil War Fortifications Hike Oct. 10  
Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a free, guided hike of Civil War fortifications on Stringers Ridge on Wed., Oct. 10, at 5 p.m. National Park Historian Jim Ogden will lead the hour and a half walk, which will start on the southern end of Moccasin Bend, near Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute. Special event signs will direct the public where to park for the hike. Hike pace will be moderate over moderately difficult terrain. Chattanooga Company, Playcore, Acquires Dero Bike Racks  
Playcore, a Chattanooga company that produces play and recreation products, including Outdoor Chattanooga's traverse climbing wall, announced today the acquisition of DERO Bike Rack Co. DERO makes bicycle racks, shelters, lockers and custom storage.

Walden's Ridge Whitewater has posted a very appropriate obituary for Jeff West, who lost his life last week while kayaking the Stikine River in British Columbia. West owned the Ace Funyaks/Ace Kayaking School in Ocoee, TN. A brilliantly talented kayaker, West also mentored and taught hundreds of whitewater paddlers. He was, according to one friend, "a superhero."

 


Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Receives Grant To Promote Safe Boating

The week of May 18-24 is recognized as National Safe Boating Week, and conservation rangers with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Law Enforcement Division encourage those on the water to wear life jackets, file a float plan, stay sober and follow DNR regulations for safe boating.  During National Safe Boating Week, and throughout the boating season, the National ... Agencies Announce Funding Agreement For Federal Trout Hatchery Operation, Tennessee Valley Stocking

Senator Lamar Alexander and representatives from the Tennessee Valley Authority, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced Friday a new agreement that will continue popular trout stocking programs in reservoirs and tailwaters of certain TVA dams across the region. Baker Says City Withdrawal On Riverbend Security Will Make Pin Costs Rise Next Year

Riverbend Festival Executive Director Chip Baker told the Civitan Club on Friday that the city's decision to no longer provide city police officers inside the festival gates will cost pin prices to go up next year.
