School Board, County Commission Considering Interlocal Agreement; Meeting Set Thursday

Monday, September 03, 2012

The County School Board will meet Thursday to consider an interlocal agreement with the County Commission.

The two bodies are trying to work out an impasse that has delayed work on a badly needed new East Brainerd Elementary School.

The facilities committee of the school board will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at the county school headquarters in Bonny Oaks.

Then the board will meet in a special called session on the interlocal agreement at 4:30 p.m.

Officials said, "The purpose of the special called session is for an update on staffing due to increased enrollment and for consideration of an Inter-local agreement between Hamilton County Board of Education and the Hamilton County Commission."

County Commission members have been asking that the school board set aside money from the sale of school property for use in building new schools or buying property for new schools.

The commission recently declined to approve an architect for the new East Brainerd Elementary School until it had an agreement on that issue and an understanding of the county school building program.

School officials said design work needs to start soon on the East Brainerd Elementary if it is to be ready by the fall of 2014. It will be built at the site of the former David Brainerd School.

Our Criminal Justice System Is Broken
