Friday, September 07, 2012 - by B.B. Branton

Notre Dame and Soddy Daisy converted on free kicks and battled to a 1-1 tie Thursday in a girls high school soccer match.

Notre Dame (3-1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute as Elizabeth Ciabattone scored from five yards out off a free kick by Mackenzie Nadeau.

The host Trojans tied the match in the 75th minute as senior Emily Bryan scored her first career goal off a free kick from 30 yards out on the right side.

"We played a great first half and had two good scoring opportunities but could not convert," said Soddy Daisy coach Moises Drumond.

"We didn't play that well in the second half until the last 15 minutes.

"We must play with that same emotion and effort we showed late in the match for 80 minutes."

The Trojans (3-1-2) had two good scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes.

First, Miranda Smith sent a penalty kick over the cross bar  in the 16th minute after teammate Summer Lanter was taken down in the box.

Earlier in the half, Lanter miss hit a a shot attempt at an open goal on a corner kick when the ball skipped past the Notre Dame goalkeeper.

Irish keeper Natalie Graham had four saves on the night, including knocking away (tipping over the cross bar) a second half free kick by Miranda Smith with 33 minutes remaining in the match.

Trojan goalkeeper Baylee Burt had five saves, none bigger than tipping away a Blair Barker shot from 15 yards out in extra time in the second half. Barker also had a shot hit the cross bar.

A Barker shot in the 45th minute hit the cross bar and Soddy Daisy was able to clear the ball.

"I was pleased with they way we worked especially in the second half," said Notre Dame coach Jim Schermehhorn. "Having the lead for most of the second half gave our players a good deal of confidence."

Notre Dame led in shots taken (20-10), while the Trojans led in free kicks (8-3) and corner kicks (6-4).

Both goalkeepers played well in the nets with saves at crucial times in the match.

Thanks, Sheriff

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department is very responsive and professional out in Apison, and I appreciate that.  We have some fine deputies serving Hamilton County.    I took a minute to call and tell them thank you, I hope my neighbors will also. Brian Wood Apison (click for more)
