The UTC volleyball team wrapped up the Kennesaw State Owls Classic with a 3-0 win Saturday evening over North Carolina Central, and freshman Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) was named to the all-tournament team for her performance in the four-match weekend.

The Mocs dropped a tight match with host Kennesaw State to begin the final day of the tournament. The Owls took a 3-1 win over UTC with two sets decided by less than five points.

KSU won the first frame 25-21 over Chattanooga. With each team evenly matched, Kennesaw State recording two kills more while UTC committed just one more error, the Owls took advantage of more attacks than the Mocs. KSU managed a .111 attack percentage in the first set while Chattanooga's attacking percentage stood at .023.

The Mocs took the next set with a convincing 25-12 score. Chattanooga downed five more kills than the Owls in the frame and was nearly flawless with only one error. UTC led Kennesaw State the entire set and only allowed KSU to score back-to-back points once during the frame.

Chattanooga battled KSU to a 19-19 score in the third set, looking to take a 2-1 match lead, but the Owls overcame the Mocs 25-22. UTC was able to eclipse KSU 20-19 on an attacking error, but Kennesaw State scored three quick points to take the lead the sealed the set off with a kill for the three-point victory.

UTC looked to stay alive in the match with a win in the fourth set, but Kennesaw State mirrored the Mocs performance in the second set to down Chattanooga 25-11 to take the 3-1 match win. UTC was only allowed back-to-back points once during the final frame, and the Owls pulled away on an eight-point run to put themselves out of reach.

Despite the loss, freshman Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) was an offensive force for the Mocs with 11 kills and 30 attacks in the match. Gainer followed up with 9 kills while freshman Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) and senior Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) each recorded six kills.

Junior Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) picked up 29 assists and senior libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) was solid on defense with 17 digs.

Chattanooga picked up its win against North Carolina Central to wrap up play in the Owls Classic Saturday evening, taking the match 3-0.

The Eagles tied the Mocs 21-21 late in the match after being unable to hold Chattanooga to a four-point deficit. A couple of attacking errors and kills from Gainer and Batterton gave UTC a 25-21 victory in the match's first set.

The Mocs took the first two points of the second set, but North Carolina Central poured on the points during the next 12 rallies to take a 9-5 lead over UTC. Despite the 9-3 run by the Eagles, Chattanooga climbed out of the four point hole to take a 17-13 advantage. North Carolina Central was not done yet, however, as they tied the Mocs with an 18-18 score. UTC sealed the second set with a 7-2 run to soar over the Eagles 25-20.

Chattanooga completed the match-sweep with a 25-19 win in the third set. A tight 20-18 score late in the frame, two kills from Teter and a kill from freshman Julimar Alvarado (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) put the Mocs out of reach.

Teter led the Mocs offensive attack with 15 kills, and Camacho collected 25 of 29 assists in the match.

Gainer was named to the all-tournament team for her performance over the weekend. The freshman not only downed 32 kills but also blocked 14 opposing attacks while digging 32 spikes on defense.

The Mocs return to action Tuesday night as they host Alabama State at Maclellan Gym at 7 p.m. Admission is free and will feature post-match autographs from players and coaches. Live stats and live video will also be provided for the Chattanooga home game. UTC is 4-0 this season at home.
