Man Repeatedly Tries To Break Into East Ridge Residence As Shots Are Fired

  • Sunday, January 13, 2013

An East Ridge resident and his father fired shots early Sunday morning when they said a man tried to break into the son's residence.

At approximately 1:47 a.m., East Ridge Police responded to 424 S. Seminole Dr. in reference to a burglary in progress. While officers were responding to the scene they were notified by dispatchers
that shots had been fired at the scene. Officers arrived just four minutes after being dispatched and found the suspect still on the porch of the home. He was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was identified as Chas Scruggs, 22, of Hixson.

East Ridge Criminal Investigators responded to speak with the victims and to process the scene for evidence. The resident told investigators they heard someone pounding on the front door. The resident then yelled through the door asking “What do you want?” and told the suspect that the police had been notified. The suspect then broke out a window and was attempting to unlock the door. At this time the resident fired one shot towards the suspect.

The resident’s father arrived just prior to police and challenged the suspect. The suspect then charged toward him. The father, who was also armed, then fired one shot into the ground. The suspect then returned to the porch and continued to attempt to gain entry until officers arrived and took him into custody.

Scruggs was transported to the Hamilton County Jail, where he was charged with aggravated burglary and vandalism.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
