Rising floodwaters are causing concern about some Chattanooga area creeks and causing some school closings or delays for Tuesday. The rain is not set to end until Thursday.
A flood warning was issued for early Monday morning through Tuesday morning along a section of Lookout Creek beginning at New England in Dade County, Ga. The flooding was expected to expand into Lookout Valley in Hamilton County.
The creek was at 11.7 feet very early Monday morning and rising. Flood stage is 12 feet. Minor flooding was forecast.
A previous crest of the creek was 12.8 feet on Feb. 11, 1981.
Also, there is a flood warning for South Chickamauga Creek. At 11:15 a.m. Monday, the stage was 15.4 feet and rising. Flood stage is 18 feet. Minor flooding is forecast. The creek is expected to be near 18 feet by Tuesday afternoon and fall below flood stage on Tuesday night.
There is also concern about flooding at Fort Oglethorpe from West Chickamauga Creek.
Closed Tuesday due to flooding were Polk, McMinn, Marion and Meigs County Schools.
Walker, Catoosa and Chattooga school systems had a two-hour delay as did Bledsoe, Grundy and Van Buren County Schools.
Chickamauga City Schools had an hour and a half delay.
