World War II Veteran Had 37-Year Career With U.S. Postal Service

Joseph Bryan Fryar, Sr., 85 of Chattanooga, died on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at his home.  

He was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Chattanooga to the late Pleasant Franklin and Emma Laura Fryar.

Mr. Fryar was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hornet.  He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 37 years of service.  He was a member of Mountain View Presbyterian Church. 

His brother, Clyde Fryar preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Vera Fryar; son, Joe B. Fryar, Jr. and his wife Joan of Hixson; daughter, Nancy Hale of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Bryan Fryar III and his wife Jennifer of Chattanooga; Allison Caudle and her husband Darin of Haymarket, Virginia; Emily Alexander and her husband Scott of Chattanooga; Matt Hale and his wife Heather of Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Joey IV, Blake, Thomas, Lauren, Peyton, Emma, and Abigail; one brother, Jack Fryar and his wife Ellen of Chattanooga; sister-in-law, Shirley Fryar of Lookout Valley, and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Memory Gardens, West.  

The family will receive friends on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 8214 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, Tn..
