The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chair of Excellence in Judaic Studies and the UTC Department of Philosophy and Religion are sponsoring a public lecture by Anthony Bale, professor of Medieval Literature at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Mr. Bale will present “A View of Jerusalem from Late Medieval England: John Mandeville and His Readers” on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 5:30 p.m. in the Raccoon Mountain Room of the UTC University Center.
Mr. Bale published an English translation of the fourteenth-century Book of Marvels and Travels attributed to Sir John Mandeville. This work describes a journey from Europe to Jerusalem and on into Asia, and the many peoples and customs the author encountered in the East.
A captivating blend of fact and fantasy, Mandeville's Book influenced not only late medieval culture, but also Christopher Columbus and others during the age of exploration.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
