Navy Veteran Of World War II Retired From TVA

Evelyn McConnell Cox, 90, died in a local hospital on January 22, 2013.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, she was the first woman from this area to join the WAVES.

Mrs. Cox attended Hunter College in New York, Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater, Ok., and graduated from the University of Chattanooga with a bachelor's degree.

Mrs. Cox was formerly employed by The Chattanooga Times and was retired from TVA after 35 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tokie J. and Eldetta McConnell and husband William M. Cox.

Survivors include one son, Terry Wayne Cox (Jeanie) of Harrison; one daughter, Cathie Gayle Cox of East Ridge; one grandson, Richard Wayne Cox of New York; one granddaughter, Amy McConnell Thomas (Brad) of Ooltewah; one great-granddaughter, Rylee McConnell Thomas; and one great-grandson, Andrew Morgan Thomas.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 5-7 p.m.
