Traffic Moving With Little Ice Reported Thus Far In Chattanooga Area

Friday, January 25, 2013

Traffic was moving on Chattanooga area roads on Friday morning with icy conditions not yet materializing in most sections.

No traffic problems were reported on I-24 and I-75.

Both the W Road and Roberts Mill Road are closed to traffic due to weather-related issues.

The main roads were passable at Lookout Mountain, Tn., but some secondary roads were icy.

A chance of freezing rain remained in the forecast throughout Friday.

It was set to be 48 degrees and sunny on Saturday.

AccuWeather reports while snow swings from the Midwest to the mid-Atlantic, an ice storm will continue to roll across the interior South Friday with dangerous travel conditions.

People from middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky eastward to northeastern Georgia, upstate South Carolina, western, northern and central North Carolina and part of southern Virginia will be slipping and sliding on a glaze of ice.

Cities from Bowling Green, Ky., and Knoxville, Tenn., to Greenville, S.C., Asheville, Charlotte, Wintston-Salem and Raleigh, N.C. can expect several hours of ice to an all-out ice storm, the report said.

Roads were like a skating rink in portions of Kentucky and Tennessee for the morning drive. Multiple vehicles were sliding in ditches and there have been reports of multiple vehicle accidents.

Travel will be dangerous in these areas. It will not be until Saturday in many locations that temperatures rebound enough to melt all of the ice off roadways and sidewalks.

People are urged to exercise extreme caution even where air temperatures are a few degrees above freezing. In some cases ice can form on colder surfaces in these conditions, such as bridges, overpasses and decks. The thin, clear ice may appear to be only wet.

In some areas, the ice will accrue to a thickness of 0.25-.0.50 o an inch thick, which is enough to weigh down weak tree limbs and bring down power lines.

On the northern fringe of the ice, across portion of eastern Kentucky to southern Virginia and along much of the North Carolina border, snow and sleet will be mixed in for a time. From Elizabeth City, N.C. to Norfolk, Va. a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain are forecast. Although roads can still be slippery, the amount of snow and sleet may cut down on the risk of downed lines.

Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem. The boat blocks the view of and from the prettiest park in our town. The crew take many of the parking spots around the park leaving families to park across Frazier and schlep their kids, strollers and picnics to the park. You don't get fireworks ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: 50 Facts About Our Bodies

Maybe 20 years ago I became entranced by a book called “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.” It was co-authored by a surgeon, Paul Brand, and a Christian writer, Phillip Yancey, and gave one specific after another about the human body and how only God could have created such a miraculous machine. Today the book is a classic and I have marveled ever since over how unbelievable human ... (click for more)
