World War II Veteran Was Co-Owner Of Fountain Square Grocery Store On Georgia Avenue

John Boyd “Jack” Stutz died on Wednesday, January 23, 2013.  

He was a beloved patriarch, affectionately named and known to his grandchildren as “Dodaddy.”   

His birthplace was Chattanooga, on Feb. 13, 1921, to the late Lucy B. Holloway and Paul E. Stutz.  He was the youngest of seven children.  

He spent his life committed in love to his late wife of 50 years, Vivian Corinne Sargent Stutz. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Susan E. Stutz-McDonald and his grandson, Mark Milam Schmissrauter, Jr.  

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp during World War II. He owned, in partnership with his brothers, the Fountain Square Grocery Store on Georgia Avenue.  

In mid-life, he became a life underwriter and district manager for the Equitable Life Assurance Society.  He was a communicant of St. Augustine Church and a devout Catholic who led a beautiful and blessed life.  

He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and a graduate of Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte, N.C.  

He is survived by his four remaining children, Byron (Lynne) Stutz, Sally (Robin) Baker, Judy (Ed) Middleswart, and Dorothy Stutz Schmissrauter; grandchildren, John Boyd (Megan) Stutz II, Dustin and Brent (Saara) Baker, Hugh Ryan, Jacqueline, and Jennifer McDonald, Alex Middleswart, and Aaron, Reagan and Matthew Schmissrauter; and great-grandchildren, Elle and Kendall Stutz.

Mass of the Resurrection will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Augustine Catholic Church on Signal Mountain.
