SOCM Opposes Fracking In Tennessee

  • Tuesday, January 29, 2013

The Statewide Organization for Community Mpowerment (SOCM) is opposing allowing fracking in Tennessee.

Fracking is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to produce petroleum or natural gas.

SOCM officials noted on Thursday at 4 p.m. CST in Nashville the Executive Subcommittee of the State Building Commission will hear an agenda item that "if approved would allow a waiver of appraisal of mineral rights and it would be the first step in the process of opening up the Cumberland Forest to a research project to study the effects of fracking."

SOCM said, "By taking urgent action now you can tell the Executive Subcommittee of the State Building Commission that you do not approve of opening up public land to fracking."
