Janey Violetta Stitt, 74, of East Brainerd, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in a local hospital.  

She was born November 5, 1938 in Chattanooga to the late Leona and Elmer Tucker, Sr. 

She attended Tyner High School and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1956.  She was a 1958 graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens with a degree in Secretarial Science. 

Fresh out of college, she accepted a job in Civil Service with the Department of Defense in Washington DC where she worked for 10 years.

She met her husband Bill in Washington, D.C., married Dec. 31, 1966, moved back to Chattanooga and continued her career locally for four more years. 

She was a devout Christian serving as a lifelong member of Morris Hill Baptist Church and the Golden Circle Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Collegedale Ruritan Club, The Hamilton County Republican Women’s Club,  the Freedoms Foundation, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority with whom she worked on various volunteer projects.   

Mrs. Stitt was very active in Republican Party activities in Hamilton County.  She was avid about voter registration and believed strongly in others becoming registered voters; she was a poll watcher; a precinct chairman; a district coordinator; and was instrumental in several local Republican campaigns. She received numerous awards from the Hamilton County GOP.  

Her brother, James Tucker preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Bill Stitt; daughters, Barbara Stitt-Allen and her husband J. Brett Allen of Atlanta; Catherine Etters and her husband Mark of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Eugene W. Stitt and his wife Terri of Fishers, In.; three brothers, Elmer Tucker, Jr. and his wife Nellie of Chattanooga; Eugene Tucker of Dalton; and Robert L. Tucker and his wife Gail of Birchwood; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at Morris Hill Baptist Church with Reverend Bill Mason and Reverend Jeff Crim officiating. Burial will follow at Morris Hill Cemetery

The family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 1, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
