A duplex in East Ridge was damaged by fire early Friday afternoon.
East Ridge Police responded to 6913 B Martha Ave. at approximately 12:08 p.m. in reference to a burglar alarm. When officers arrived on the scene, they found smoke coming from several broken windows. East Ridge Fire/Rescue was notified and responded to the scene. It was verified that no one was at the residence as firefighters entered the duplex to extinguish the fire.
East Ridge Fire/Arson investigators also responded to the scene.
The exact cause and origin of the fire is not yet known; however, foul play is not believed to be a factor. It appears that heat from the fire caused the windows to shatter and initiate the burglar alarm.
The American Red Cross was notified to assist the displaced occupants. Damages are estimated at $35,000.
Units responding to the scene included East Ridge Rescue 1, Squad 1, Squad 2, and Engine 2. Angel EMS also responded for standby.
