The public is invited to bring animals to the front lawn of Christ United Methodist Church, 8645 East Brainerd Road, on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the annual "Blessing of the Animals." Rev. Mark Flynn will lead the gathering in thanking God for the beauty of the creation and the signs of love and devotion the animal friends provide, as well as personal prayer and thanksgiving for each animal present. In the past they have blessed dogs, cats, horses, lizards, frogs, hamsters, gerbils, birds, and more.
The Christian Church has a long history of celebrating such blessings. Officials said, from the opening chapters of scripture to the final verses, we are called to care for God's creation and show love to all creatures. Does not the final verse of the book of Jonah express that God has great concern not only for the people of Nineveh but also it's animals?! Does not scripture proclaim in Psalm 148 that all God's creatures praise the Lord, and so should we? The best image we have of heaven is a room filled with all the creatures of God, human and animal gathered around God's throne. St. Francis wrote an ode to God's living things: "All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures."
