Chattanooga Market will host the 12th annual Chattanooga Oktoberfest Oct. 19 and 20. Presented by Village Volkswagen of Chattanooga, the festival includes an array of German traditions: brats and German culinary foods from local restaurants and market vendors, a bier garten featuring 99 local and season craft brews, the Wurstbrats Oompah band and other authentic German music, a Scenic City Volks Folks car show, free concerts from HITS 96, German dance performances and more.
New for 2013 is extended hours on Saturday featuring a Polka party. The evening hours, 5-8 p.m., will offer dinner fare, live music and a Miss/Mr. Chattanooga Oktoberfest pageant and contest emceed by Jason Walker of HITS 96.
The contest and crowning will take place at 6 p.m. and is open to the public. Oktoberfest organizers encourage folks to attend the event in German costume and report to the EPB stage at 6 p.m. for participation in the contest. Miss and Mr. Chattanooga Oktoberfest will be determined by audience enthusiasm and prizes will be awarded.
In the 12th year of Chattanooga Oktoberfest, Chris Thomas, executive director, commented, “The after-hours Polka Party became a necessity actually. In years past, folks just weren’t ready to leave by end of day Saturday; so we’ve expanded our hours to let the party continue. The farmers will leave at 5 p.m. and Oktoberfest will be in full swing until close at 8 p.m”.
As Chattanooga’s oldest and largest Oktoberfest celebration, the festival draws crowds locally and regionally each year. Many come to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of the German traditions, bringing their families for a day of entertainment, shopping or to relax in the fall outdoors for free musical performances, officials said.
