Competing against schools from NCAA Division I down to the NAIA, the Covenant cross country teams both had solid showings at the Berry College Viking Open on Saturday morning.
The women placed eighth out of 21 teams, and third out of competing NCAA Division III schools, while the men placed 13th overall and fourth of the Division III schools.
The Covenant women were again paced by junior Beth Burgess as she finished 33rd overall with a 6k time of 24:49.47. Spookie Eaves was not far behind her teammate as she ran the course in 24:57.45 to finish in 35th. Esther Anderson placed 43rd with her time of 25:18.17. A pair of freshman in Anna Hankal (25:39.91) and Natalie Barkmann (26:48.37) placed 51st and 74th, respectively.
The Lady Scots finished in a tie for eighth with Sewanee with 218 points. The University of Georgia took the top spot with 34 points. There were 178 total runners.
On the men's side, it was Stephen Dillon leading the Covenant runners. The junior ran the 8k in a time of 28:30.62 to place 67th individually. Senior Zach Smith finished 68th with his time of 28:32.89, while fellow senior Matt Gorter was 78th with a 28:51.37 time. Jack Williams was the fourth Covenant finisher with a time of 30:28.23 to place 118th. Max Conrad was 134th with his 8k time of 31:24.80.
Covenant was 13th with 360 points. Tennessee Wesleyan captured the team title.
The Covenant teams will compete next at the USA South Conference championships on Nov. 2 in Greensboro, N.C.
