World War II Veteran Held Long Career At U.S. Stove

Leonard J. Carnes, 99, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at his residence.

Mr. Carnes was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and retired from U.S. Stove following many years of service.  He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon Peter and Sarah Davis Carnes, and by eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his children, Roger Dale (Mary) Carnes, Ringgold, Jerry Ray (Vickie) Carnes, Benton, Tn., Rickey Joe Carnes, Guntersville, Al., Debra Lou Jean (Dexter) Wallin, LaFayette, and Sarah Carnes Lowe, Ringgold; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with Ministers James Langston and Roger Carnes officiating. Burial will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park with full military honors. Jeremy Marchmon, Jerry Carnes, Jr., Rickey Len Carnes, Carl Carnes, Colton Begley, Gary Creekmore, and Elijah Simpson will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 25, from 3–8 p.m. at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory, at the end of historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville.
