The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team used two keepers Sunday afternoon at UNCG, but it wasn’t enough as the Spartans claimed a 5-0 win over the Mocs in Southern Conference action.
“We started with Taylor [Mangrum] and she’s made big saves for us this year,” Chattanooga head coach J.D. Kyzer said. “But we felt it was time to give Lauren a chance and she did a great job today. She came up really big.”
The Spartans got scoring from four different players with one goal credited as an own goal against Chattanooga on a corner kick in the second half.
UTC junior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) got off the first shot of the game and would have a team-best four in the game, but it was UNCG’s first shot that connected with the net. Lauren Lover’s shot on a pass from Christina Chang for what would stand as the game winner. Over the next 15 minutes, UNCG scored twice more and led 3-0 at the half.
In the 75th minute, the Spartans took a corner that didn’t clear and was credited as an own goal against the Mocs and Candace Forbes scored the final goal for UNCG in the 84th minute, assisted by Katelyn Mountjoy for the 5-0 final.
“We just didn’t have the energy today,” Kyzer said of his team’s performance. “Elon subbed a lot on us Friday night and we just don’t have their numbers. This team has given it’s all every game and done more than I could ask for, but the batteries were running out. You can see the soreness. But they don’t quit. I’m very proud of them and their effort.”
Mackezyk had two shots on goal for Chattanooga and sophomore Loryn Queen (Lanesville, Ind.) had two shots for the Mocs. UNCG outshot Chattanooga 23-8 with a 17-2 shots on goal advantage. The Mocs had two corner kicks to the Spartans five.
UTC senior keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) had seven saves through the first half, giving up three goals while sophomore Lauren Thomas (Memphis, Tenn.) played the second and made five saves with two goals against.
Chattanooga will close out the season Wednesday evening at Samford. The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Live stats will be available on the schedule page of GoMocs.
