Jaren J. McFarland is facing charges for robbing a Mapco assistant manager who was making a deposit at Regions Bank at 5529 Brainerd Road.

McFarland, 27, of 7673 Bishop Dr., is charged with aggravated robbery.

In the incident on Saturday, Sharron Arnold said he had brought a deposit to the bank and was approaching the drop box. He said a man approached him and demanded that he hand over the bag.

Mr. Arnold, who said he had been shot before, said he complied with the request. He dropped the money bag which was in a plastic bag.

He said the suspect grabbed the bag and ran off behind the bank.

The Mapco assistant manager said he believed the man was armed, but did not see a weapon.

The robber was wearing a camouflage mask and a black hoodie.

An officer who was canvassing the area spotted a newer-model Impala with no tags at Belair and Pisgah. The officer turned on his emergency equipment at Pisgah and Brainerd Road. The vehicle continued to Tacoa Circle, where a black male in a black hoodie jumped from the passenger side and ran between houses.

After a short foot pursuit, McFarland was tased and taken into custody.

Police said they retraced the path of where he had run and found a camouflage ski mask, gloves, a Beretta pistol, a white plastic bag and the bank deposit.

McFarland refused to answer questions, but police said he did say that it was "a stupid mistake."
