The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team dropped a 9-0 decision to Furman in Southern Conference action Thursday night at Finley Stadium. The Mocs fall to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in league play while the Paladins improve to 8-2-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference action.
Furman’s Delaney Sheehan came off the bench with a hat trick while starter Jamie Alexander had two goals for the Paladins as the pair combined for five of their team’s nine scores. Stephanie DeVita added one goal to her league leading total on the night while Furman got scores from three more players.
DeVita got the scoring started taking the ball down the right side from midfield and dribbling past defenders to score what would be the game winner in the sixth minute. It would only take 2:21 for Furman to go up 2-0 on the first of two goals by Alexander. She took a pass across the field from Carlie Couch and the two would team up on the third goal in the 15th minute to make it 3-0.
Chattanooga held off the Furman offense the remaining of the opening stanza to go into the half at 3-0.
Couch started the second half with a goal in the 54th minute on a long pass from teammate Claire Sullivan in stride. India Robinson added the fifth goal in the 59th minute on a free kick and Sheehan scored three of the final four goals including on in the final 34 seconds.
Chattanooga’s Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) had two of Chattanooga’s five shots while Monica Speth (Janesville, Wisc.), Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.) and Ashley Simmons (Hixson, Tenn.) each added one shot each.
UTC senior keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) started the game in goal and recorded seven saves through 67:11 while sophomore Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) took over for the final 22:49 and gave up four goals with one save.
Furman outshot Chattanooga 31-5 and had seven corner kicks. The Mocs made eight saves, with four in each period.
Chattanooga will hit the road Sunday to take on Wofford in the first of a three game road trip. The game will kick off at 2 p .m.
