The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team moved past Furman into 10th-place with 18 holes to play at the Brickyard Collegiate Saturday. UTC shot 294, its second-best round of 2013-14.
“We keep improving and that’s encouraging,” Head Coach Mark Guhne said. “I’m proud of the way Stuart (Thomas) came back from yesterday.”
Thomas led the Mocs with a two-under par 70. He opened with an 81 and has a total of 151 through 36 holes.
Ewan Scott (St. Andrews, Scotland) leads Chattanooga at 148 with rounds of 73 and 75. He is two clear of Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) at 150. Thomas is at 151 followed by Wes Gosselin (Knoxville) with a 153.
“We are not scoring like we need to,” Guhne added. “We’ll get one low round, there needs to be two or three. We’ll get there.”
Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) fired his second straight under par round with a 71 (-1) today. He is tied for 11th at three-under 141 playing as an individual.
Host Mercer is the leader at 20-under par, 556, after a 16-under performance today shooting 272. It holds a one-stroke advantage over first round leader Georgia Tech at 557. Virginia Tech is nine out at 11-under 565.
The Yellow Jackets’ Ollie Schniederjans is the individual leader at minus eight (136). Mercer’s Emmanuel Kountakis and Virginia Tech’s Scott Vincent are one stroke off the pace at seven under (137).
The Mocs start their final round Sunday morning at 8:50 a.m., on the 10th tee. Gosselin leads off followed by Thomas (9:00), Robb (9:10), Bunn (9:20) and Scott (9:30).
