Lee Women Golfers Leading At BSC Shootout
Sunday, October 06, 2013
The Lee women's golf team will hold a 1-stroke lead when they tee-off in the final round of the BSC Shootout on Monday morning. The Lady Flames will be seeking to capture their third straight title in the annual event hosted by Birmingham Southern College.
Paced by a 2-under 69 by senior Courtney Shelton, Lee posted a team score of 299 on Sunday and hold the slim margin over Cumberland University (300). Rhodes College is still in striking distance at 302, while Wittenberg University (312) and Oglethorpe University (317) round out the top five teams in the 12-team field.
"Today wasn't quite our best effort," admitted coach John Maupin. "I think this team is capable of a lot better. We just struggled getting any putts to fall today. Courtney (Shelton) gave us a strong round, which was really big to keep us in the mix. Monday is a new day and I'm expecting a very focused effort from our team."
Sophomore Bernadette Little (76), Madison Alexander (77), Cori Burns (77) and Sarah Robertson (81) rounded out the Lee scoring. Callie Kitchens, playing in the individual competition, finished with a 78.
Shelton holds a 2-stroke advantage over Emily Javadi (71) and a 3-stroke lead over Chelsea Branscum (72) in the medalist competition. Elizabeth of Oglethorpe and Sarah Dolmovich of Birmingham Southern both finished with a 73 to round out the top five.
