Dalton State women’s coach Jim McGrew traveled to below the “gnat belt” on Tuesday and came back with two important pieces of the first ever Lady Roadrunner team.
McGrew called it an “exciting day” for the DS program as Taylor Marie Griner of Colquitt County High School and Caroline Griffin of Tift Area Academy signed with the new program.
Griner is a former GHSA all-star golfer who played against McGrew’s Northwest Whitfield teams. Griffin’s Lady Panthers won the 2012 state GISA championship.
The newest Lady Roadrunners grew up playing golf together, and decided they would like to continue in college.
“We had the same coach,” Griner said. “We kind of talked to each other and decided that we wanted to do this.”
“We’re really good friends and we’re both pretty good at golf,” added Griffin.
That decision was music to McGrew’s ears.
“It gives us instant credibility,” he said.
“They’ll be out playing tournaments and people will know them,” he added. “They know what caliber of player they are. It’s like ‘Wait a minute, if they’re going to Dalton State, maybe that’s a pretty good place for me’.”
McGrew said he is recruiting talented golfers who can compete for a conference championship, be capable of being an academic All American, and be a “face of the program.”
Griner said a recent visit sold her on Dalton State.
“The Farm and Dalton Country Club were beautiful to play on and all of the people were very welcoming,” said Griner. “I love the town and the weather was really nice compared to South Georgia.”
Griner is in the top 5% of her class with a 3.7 GPA while taking college dual enrollment. She will graduate with honors. Griffin is also a scholar athlete and a member of the Beta Club.
Taylor Marie is the daughter of Sophie and Rusty Griner of Moultrie. Caroline is the daughter of Darlene and Brad Griffin of Sycamore, Ga.
