TVA Transporting Large Transformer To Raccoon Mountain Sunday, Short I-24 Closure

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

A specialized transporter carrying a large power transformer to the Tennessee Valley Authority's Raccoon Mountain hydro pump storage facility will briefly close Interstate 24 in Hamilton County on Sunday.

Weather permitting the transport company will leave the railroad facility on Wauhatchi Pike in Chattanooga at 7:30 a.m.  The 500,000-pound load will travel along Cummings Highway and Raccoon Mountain Road to the plant site.

Because the transporter is too large to go under the interstate overpass, I-24 at exit 174 will close for approximately 10 minutes to allow for the equipment to travel up the on-ramp, across the highway median and then back down the off-ramp. The interstate crossing will occur around 8:30 a.m.

Local law enforcement agencies and the Tennessee Department of Transportation will be assisting in the escort and temporary interstate closure. Motorists traveling these routes may experience delays and should use caution.
