UTC's Mock Named Wrestler Of The Week

  • Wednesday, November 13, 2013

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Corey Mock is the first Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for the 2013-14 season, the league office announced today. This week’s award encompasses all competition from Nov. 2-12.

Mock, a junior transfer from North Carolina, opened his Chattanooga career by going 5-0 with a trio of wins over ranked opponents over the first weekend of competition.

The 165-pounder started his season with a 9-2 decision over Cumberland’s Kirk Johnson as Chattanooga picked up a 42-3 win over the Bulldogs at home Friday. Later that evening, Mock topped Wisconsin’s Frank Cousins 6-1 in the Mocs’ 37-3 loss to the eighth-ranked Badgers, securing Chattanooga’s only points in the match.

Two days later at the Hokie Duals in Salem, Va., Mock went 3-0, downing three ranked wrestlers. Entering the match ranked 13th nationally, Mock dropped No. 11 Joseph Booth 5-1 in the win over Hofstra to open his day.

Against 17th-ranked Virginia Tech, Mock posted an 8-0 major decision over No. 10 Chris Moon. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native capped his day with a 5-0 win over No. 12 Ramon Santiago of Rider to complete his first five duals at Chattanooga unscathed.

For the week, Mock was not taken down and allowed no more than two points to any opponent. The only points he allowed on the week were via escapes.  He is now ranked No. 8 nationally at 165 by Intermat.

Chattanooga (2-3) hosts Life and Shorter on Saturday evening at Maclellan Gym at 5:00 p.m. (E.S.T.).  Live scoring and MocsVision video are both available on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.  Admission is free to both matches on Saturday.
