Lee Drops Five-Setter To Host Alabama-Hunstville

In a match that had more than its share of ups and downs, the Lee volleyball team dropped a five-setter (3-2) to host Alabama-Huntsville on Friday evening.

The contest had all types of twists and turns as the Lady Flames won the first set with ease, 25-14, but the Chargers pushed Lee to the limit in the second set and won 25-27. Huntsville carried the momentum into the third set and turned away a late comeback by the Lady Flames, winning 21-25 to take a 2-1 set advantage.

Lee quickly regrouped and overpowered the Chargers in set four, 25-14, only to see the home club claim the short set 11-15 and the match, 3-2.


The losing effort was paced by Latrice Johnson who collected a double-double, 19 kills, 21 digs and three blocks. Freshman Erin Hill tallied 16 kills. Paula Martins totaled a double-double, 15 kills, 22 digs and two blocks. Lauren Williams had another strong effort with 14 kills, four digs and a game-high seven blocks.

Camil Martinez also did her share with a double-double, 67 assists, 19 digs, six kills and two blocks. Freshman Catherine Conley finished with seven kills and three blocks, while Sarah Davis added 26 digs and Deborah Magalhaes had 11.

The winning Chargers were paced by Rachel Brugman with 17 kills. Haley Snyder followed with 13 kills. Ashton Baker dished off 30 assists and Alexis Deal came up with 22 digs.

The Lady Flames  (16-8, 12-6) bounced back to defeat North Alabama, 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) to end regular season play in its first season of GSC Conference competition.

Dalton State Women Topple Martin Methodist, Bethel

The SSAC Round-up hosted by Dalton State ended with success. The Lady Roadrunners finished off the Southern States Athletic Conference part of the regular season Friday at Lakeshore Park Tennis Center, beating Martin Methodist in the morning and Bethel University in the afternoon. Man Charged In Shooting On Sixth Avenue Had Been Shot Himself Last Week; Police Say Incident "Part Of Gang War"
