University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head football coach Russ Huesman is one of 21 finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award.  The Robinson Award is sponsored by The Sports Network (SportsNetwork.com), who made the announcement today, and given to the national coach of the year in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Voting will reflect only regular-season results and will be conducted by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries. The winner will be announced at The Sports Network FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation to be held Dec. 16 in Philadelphia.

The winners of the three FCS player awards - the Walter Payton (FCS outstanding player), the Buck Buchanan (FCS outstanding defensive player) and the Jerry Rice (FCS freshman of the year) - also will be announced at the national banquet.

Chattanooga is 8-3 overall and has clinched at least a share of the Southern Conference title at 6-2 in league play.  The Mocs are SoCon Champs for the first time since 1984 and have eight wins for the first time since 1980, when Coach Huesman was a junior defensive back at UTC.  The Mocs six SoCon wins are a school record and Chattanooga is in the hunt for a playoff spot for the first time since 1984.

This is the fourth winning record in the last five years at Chattanooga, all during the Russ Huesman era.  UTC only had four winning seasons in the 23 years prior to Huesman’s arrival in 2009 (1986-2008).

Coach Huesman is 31-24 in his five seasons with the Mocs.  He just passed his former coach, Bill Oliver (1980-83), for fourth on the Mocs all-time coaching win list.  Oliver went 29-14-1 in four seasons at UTC.

The Mocs visit No. 1 Alabama this weekend.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Tuscaloosa.  Catch the game on the Mocs Sports Network – ESPN Radio 105.1 The Zone in Chattanooga – or the pay-per-view broadcast.
