Corker Introduces Legislation To Keep Pressure On Iran

Bill Ties Sanctions Relief To Iran Meeting Existing International Obligations Over Illicit Nuclear Program

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Following an announcement that the Senate will consider Iran legislation in December, Senator Bob Corker, (R-Tn.), the ranking Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced a bill setting conditions for an acceptable final agreement with Iran that would restrict sanctions relief until Iran agrees to eliminate the threat of its nuclear program.  The Iran Nuclear Compliance Act of 2013, consistent with Iran’s existing obligations under the U.N. Security Council, requires Iran to fully comply with any interim deal reached in Geneva and further agree to the terms of an acceptable final agreement before the president of the United States could waive additional sanctions.  Further, it would restore all sanctions if Iran violates the terms of the interim agreement.

“It’s important for the Senate to proceed with this debate and keep the pressure on Iran during negotiations over their illicit nuclear program,” said Senator Corker.  “Many of us have concerns that an interim agreement in Geneva will diminish U.S. leverage without Iran meeting its existing international obligations.  That outcome could result in the interim deal becoming the final deal, legitimizing Iran’s enrichment activities in violation of numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions.  Whatever the outcome in Geneva may be this week, I’m hopeful the Senate will work in a bipartisan fashion to strengthen the position of the U.S. in these negotiations so we can reach a final status agreement that will prevent the Iranians from ever developing a nuclear weapon.

“Toward that end, I’ve offered legislation that would ensure Iran is in full compliance with any interim agreement and agrees to the essential terms of an acceptable final deal before the U.S. could further lift sanctions.  It would further cause any sanctions relieved in the interim to snap back if Iran violates any of its commitments under such an agreement.  We all want diplomacy to succeed, so I look forward to working with my colleagues and with the administration to support a successful outcome in these negotiations that are critical for the peace and security of the U.S. and the world.”

Text of the legislation and a one-page summary is available online here.

Lawlessness At Heritage Park

As a frequent visitor at Heritage Park in East Brainerd, I must say that the situation is becoming slightly out of control.  To start, parking is atrocious.  The unpaved lot contains nothing but loose gravel which has naturally given way to divots in the ground assuring you a few bumps.  Why isn't this area smoothed out?  It's not worth parking there anyways ... Roy Exum: Why I Am Thankful 2014

Over 40 years ago I was a young sports writer when I came up with the notion of setting daily things aside, just for one day, and writing about why “I Am Thankful.” Every Thanksgiving I come up with my list and it is as much about me as it is about my gratitude for all things great and small. I can’t imagine approaching this day in any other way. Here we go … I AM THANKFUL for ... (click for more)

Alcoa Run Game Has Notre Dame's Attention In 3A Semis

Notre Dame defensive lineman Robert Murphy has a good handle on what defending Class 3A champion Alcoa is likely to do against the Irish in Friday night’s semifinal playoff game at Finley Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m. “We know their running game is very powerful,” Murphy said. “They like to pound the ball and run it down your throat.” That’s exactly what the top-ranked ... (click for more)

UTC Men Defeat Coastal Carolina,78-67

UTC’s Ronrico White is use to pre-game shoot arounds, but Wednesday’s “almost midnight madness practice” 14 hours prior to tipoff against Coastal Carolina was out of the ordinary but highly effective. “My shooting touch was off (2 for 14 in the last three games) so Coach Wes Long called a shoot around for late last night and we made some adjustments in my technique and it paid ...
