Time To Support The Affordable Care Act

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

I have lived in Johnson City, TN, for six years and observed the actions and attitude of the heavily concentrated Republican conservatives in this area. As a life-long Democrat and a staunch supporter of any movement to improve the lives of the American poor and middle class, I see a gross injustice being practiced here. The Republicans and the wealthy simply are not doing what they can to improve life in our area of the state. Not only are they reluctant to step forward, they maintain that "anyone on welfare should get a job". I have resolved to do what I can to influence, expose, and persuade this gross injustice in northeast Tennessee.

I volunteered assistance to the leaders at our local Democratic office and I had a political rally at my home, in spite of discouraging advice and threats, in support of electing President Obama. Now I choose to focus on supporting the ACA.

Too many times in my 74 years have I witnessed poor people being denied medical care. In this land of abundance and plenty there is no excuse for this. Since I retired from military service, I have excellent medical coverage and have been in a position to observe the difference in my care and that of folks with lesser or no insurance coverage at all. My aunt died of cancer because she could not get medical care.

The poor, homeless and recently released prisoners come to me for work and the best I can do is help them get into the local downtown medical clinic. This works well for a start but has a limited capability. The Affordable Care Act will take these folks into the next level where their medications will be provided and they may be made well until they may become gainfully employed then becoming an asset to our society.

I agree with this statement in it's entirety and I urge representatives and citizens alike to support the Affordable Care Act.
