Sheriff Jim Hammond on Friday introduced his new deputy chief of corrections - Joseph Fowler, who was formerly deputy warden at Ellsworth Correctional Facility in Ellsworth, Kan.

Mr. Fowler, a graduate of Polk County High School, had a 14-year Army career before retiring as a sergeant major.

Sheriff Hammond said the 41-year-old Fowler was hired after many months of a nationwide recruiting effort.

Mr. Fowler has a master's degree in Leadership Studies from the University of Texas.

His previous jail experience includes Guatanamo Bay in Cuba.

He and his wife have a son and are adopting another child.

"I am blessed to be back home with my family," he said.

I am okay with Haslam’s idea of raising the gas tax and lowering the food tax.  But, I want to see a tax of bicycles since they have their own lanes now and they also have to be maintained.
