Dr. Marsha Mathews, associate professor of English at Dalton State College, was awarded the 2013 Orlando Prize for Flash Fiction for her prose piece, “Bus Ride to the City.” The award was presented by A Room of Her Own, a foundation that honors women for artistic excellence.
A collective dedicated to furthering Virginia Woolf’s vision of gender equality within the arts, A Room of Her Own awards prizes to women for their achievements in the written arts (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and playwriting) and visual arts (painting, sculpture, and photography). Dr. Mathews was awarded a cash prize for her story.
Dr. Mathews has been published in various journals, such as “Apalachee Quarterly,” “Appalachian Heritage,” and “The Panhandler.
” Additionally, she has penned two chapbooks, entitled “Northbound Single-Lane” and “Hallelujah Voices,” as well as a book of love poems, entitled “Sunglow & A Tuft of Nottingham Lace.”
