Sara Baker Akridge, 86, died on Saturday, November 30, 2013.  

Sara was born in Centertown, Tn., and lived her adult life in Rossville.  She was a 1945 graduate of Central High School.  As a young adult she worked at Henderson and Coleman as a secretary, and then stayed home to raise her family.  Sara returned to work at Fowler Brothers and then retired as a secretary from St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. 

She loved the Lord and served him at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church for over 60 years, and continued to serve her Savior at Fort Oglethorpe United Methodist Church up until the time of her death.  Sara, a loving and devoted wife and mother, was a very caring and patient person who spent her life serving others.  The last four years she dedicated to caring for her late husband in their home, following his stroke.  In her free time she enjoyed cooking, gardening, and watching Fox News.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Frank Akridge; daughter, Lynn Akridge Fuson; and parents, Joe and Colla Baker.  

Survivors include her sons, Joey (Joy) Akridge of Ringgold; Randy (Vickie) Akridge of Hixson; sisters, Evelyn Dyer of Chattanooga; Betty (Bill) Greenleaf of Kingston; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fort Oglethorpe United Methodist Church, 1733 Battlefield Parkway, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. 30742

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, with Reverend Tommy Messer and Reverend Marvin Howard officiating.  Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.


The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Heritage Funeral Home & Crematory, Battlefield Parkway.
