Jesse Mathews, who is facing a life prison sentence after pleading guilty to the murder of Chattanooga Police Sgt. Tim Chapin, has been moved to a maximum security unit at the state prison.
The Hamilton County District Attorney's Office had sent a letter to state prison officials after learning that Mathews initially was in minimum security.
TDOC officials said the DA's office was notified on Tuesday morning about the shift.
Dorinda Carter, spokesperson, said, "Commissioner Schofield spoke with the District Attorney's Office this morning and, based on additional information provided, Inmate Jesse Ray Mathews has been moved to a maximum security unit, pending reclassification.
