FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- There was not a rematch between Cleveland and Soddy Daisy for the 2013 TSSAA State Duals wrestling championship, but by the way the Blue Raiders attacked Wilson Central, perhaps the Trojans are glad they were on their way back to Chattanooga instead.
Cleveland came up short in 2012 against Soddy Daisy, but the Blue Raiders set the record for the most one-sided match in state duals history here at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo Center.
Unleashing the most aggressive and lopsided score in the history of these duals, the Blue Raiders won 13 of the 14 matches and they were all by pin in a dominating 78-4 victory.
Nine of those 13 pins were recorded in the first period with Josh Hamilton getting the quickest in just 50 seconds.
Actually, Saturday night's match was just the conclusion of a totally dominant weekend by the Blue Raiders who lost a total of four individual matches in the four meets they won, not counting the five matches at the end of the meet with Heritage where they forfeited.
Taking less than an hour to secure its first state duals title since 1994, the Blue Raiders improved to 28-2 with the win while the Wildcats drop to 42-3, Saturday's defeat being their worst of the season and the first to a team from Tennessee.
"Not bad, huh," laughed Cleveland coach Jake Yost afterward, not really sure how to react to such a lopsided whipping.
"As always, it was a great team effort, but we come out here expecting to do well. When you have high expectations, good things normally happen. When we get on a roll, we get on a roll and that was the case in this match.
"We have it going on in Cleveland, but we have to give credit to all the folks up and down the line who make this possible. From our administration to the parents to all of the kids on the team, they've made a lot of sacrifices to make this moment possible.
"We're always looking for ways to improve as this isn't the end. We'll enjoy this win today and Sunday before going back to work on Monday getting ready for the region," Yost nodded.
Austin Oliver got the ball rolling with a 1:34 pin in the first match at 126 before Haden Hamilton added the second pin 55 seconds later.
Ezra Taylor, Aaron Oliver, Josh Hamilton, Sean Von Potts, Aaron Lopez, Ethan West and Oleg Stukanov all won by pin to extend the lead to 54-0 before Wilson Central won its only match with a 14-2 major decision by John Kramer at 220.
Cleveland then finished off an incredible performance with pins from Koran Kennedy, Tristan Blansit, Chris Debien and Austin Stevison to seal the deal.
The Blue Raiders advanced to the finals with a 46-36 win over Heritage while Wilson Central earned its first berth in the finals with a 39-31 victory over Soddy Daisy. The Wildcats have never placed in the state duals before this year.
Soddy Daisy bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a 46-33 verdict over Independence and beat a determined Heritage team for third place. The Mountaineers eliminated Blackman, 39-30, in the other consolation semifinal before falling to Soddy Daisy, 38-35, in the consolation final.
Cleveland had very little problem taking care of the Mountaineers, an up-and-coming team from Maryville, but it wasn't as close as the 10-point difference might indicate.
The Blue Raiders built a 46-6 lead with five pins, a major decision and a win by injury default, but Cleveland forfeited the final five matches after the victory had been clinched.
Winning by pin for Cleveland was Stevison, Austin Oliver, Taylor, Josh Hamilton and Lopez while Haden Hamilton won with a 14-2 major decision at 132. Von Potts claimed a forfeit at 170 while West won by injury default at 182.
Jacob Stevens got Soddy Daisy off on the right foot in its match with Wilson Central, but the Wildcats sandwiched two pins around a decision for a 15-6 lead following the match at 138.
Austin Williamson scored a major decision and Gage Richmond earned a pin as Soddy Daisy regained the lead at 16-15, but the lead swapped hands two more times before Luke Reno's pin at 220 gave the Trojans a 31-24 lead.
A forfeit to the Wildcats at 285 made it a one-point match while Lane Dickeson's pin at 106 and Christian Cerrito's decision at 113 sealed the win for Wilson Central.
"We fought hard the whole way and we aren't finished yet," offered Soddy Daisy coach Jim Higgins once the dust had settled.
"Give credit to Wilson Central as they were hungry and they wanted it. But we showed a lot of character and pride as we didn't back down from anyone. We came here this weekend, accepted the challenge and represented Soddy Daisy High School very well. Some of our brothers let us down, but this group did not and they have nothing to hang their head about," the first-year coach nodded.
Soddy Daisy 38, Heritage 35: This one came down to the wire literally.
After the Mountaineers built a 33-18 with three straight pins and a decision, Soddy Daisy started its comeback.
Austin Houser got a major decision at 113 while Stevens got a first-minute pin at 120 and Tucker Russo added another major at 126 to knot the score at 32-32. The Mountaineers then took a 35-32 lead with a 5-2 decision at 132 before sophomore Austin Williamson clinched the win and third-place honors with the 29-second pin at 138.
"Austin is a sophomore who's tough as nails. He's a prime example of how it's done," praised Higgins.
"He always wrestles like that as he's an aggressive kid. He's always looking for bonus points, the coach added about his rising star.
"These kids showed a lot of heart and soul today as we really wanted this last match. They perservered and rose to the occasion when most folks didn't think we would. We didn't come here to finish third, but I'm not upset with that finish after what happened this weekend," Higgins concluded.
