The Education Council of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host Tim McGhee, dean of Engineering and Technology at Chattanooga State, as the featured speaker at the Walker County Chamber of Commerce's February Membership Luncheon at which time Walker County's STAR Students and Teachers will be recognized. The event will take place on Tuesday at the Walker County Civic Center.
Those in attendance will hear Mr. McGhee speak concerning new technology and programs that are designed to lead students and educational facilities into the future. He is a 1982 graduate of Tyner High School and was enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1984 until 2005. Since 2005 he has been employed by Chattanooga State and is currently serving as the dean of Engineering and Technology. Mr. McGhee was just awarded the 2013 Bellwether Award which recognizes outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges into the future.
During the event the PAGE STAR students and teachers from all three high schools in Walker County will be honored; Gordon Lee, LaFayette and Ridgeland. The system winners of both Chickamauga City and Walker County Schools will also be recognized during the event.
The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program, now in its 54th year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the STAR program has honored more than 23,000 students and the teachers they have selected as having the most influence on their academic success. To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 student of their class based on GPA.
During the event the Chamber's Ambassador Committee and Young Professionals Council will have spotlight tables which will introduce attendees to their respective 2013 business plans. The event will be catered by Goetz Catering and door prizes will be awarded.
