John Winston

John Henry “Skeeter” Winston, 88, died on Friday, February 1, 2013 at a local hospital. 

A native of Lafayette, Ala., he was a long-time resident of Chattanooga. He was a member of Orchard Park Seventh Day Adventist church and retired from Hamilton County Schools.

Skeeter was a gardener and fisherman and loved the Atlanta Braves. He was married for 66 years to Susie Kirk Winston, who survives him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Winston Jr and Louise Scott Winston; sister, Mary Ellis, daughter, Lydia Asare and grandson, Mark Anthony Winston.

Survivors include his wife, Susie; children, Juliette Winston, Barbara Winston, Brenda Winston, Johnnie M. (John) Baker, Johnny M. (Elnora) Winston, Vivian McKenzie, Connie (Ali) Panahaghi and Wayne (Susan) Winston; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, at the North Chapel. 

A funeral service will be held at I p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, at Orchard Park Seventh Day Adventist Church with burial to follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tn. 37343.
