Covenant Softball Falls To Piedmont in Doubleheader

Friday, March 01, 2013
The Covenant softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Piedmont on a cold Friday afternoon on Lookout Mountain. Piedmont squeaked out a 3-1 victory in game one, then the Lady Lions took game two 14-1.

The Lady Scots remain winless on the season as they drop to 0-8 overall. Piedmont keeps its perfect season record going at 6-0.

Piedmont held off Covenant for a 3-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader with two runs in the second inning and a run in the third inning.

Covenant starting pitcher Cori Hilt (0-3) pitched valiantly as she went all seven innings and allowed one earned run.

Hilt surrendered six hits, struck out one, and threw 59 strikes out of 93 pitches in her longest outing of the season.

Piedmont scored two runs in the second off an RBI single from Lauren Head and an RBI ground out by Whitney Wolfe as the Lady Lions took a 2-0 lead. Piedmont added a run in the third on a Covenant fielding error to take a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Scots got a run back in the fifth inning. Morgan Lane led off the inning with a single that was followed by a double from Hilt to put runners at second and third with nobody out. With two outs, Lane was able to advance home on a passed ball to make the score 3-1. But Covenant would get no closer.

Brittney Head (3-0) gets the complete-game win for Piedmont scattering four hits and striking out six.

Lane, Hilt, Chandler Shepherd and Morgan Strennen were responsible for Covenant's four hits in the opening game.

Game Two: Piedmont 14, Covenant 1

A nine-run first inning by Piedmont all but put the game away for the Lady Lions as they cruised to a 14-1 victory and a doubleheader sweep.

The Lady Lions had 14 come to the plate in the first inning, scoring nine runs on seven hits. They would add a run in the second inning and four more in the third inning.

Covenant got its lone run in the bottom of the fourth as Lane came through with a two-out RBI single to center field that scored Morgan Booker.

Shepherd went 2-for-3 for Covenant who also got a hit apiece from Lane and Strennen.

Starter Hannah Rogers (0-3) gets the loss for Covenant. Ellie Groenendyk threw two scoreless innings.

Jordan Ellingson (3-0) picks up the win for Piedmont as she went the distance.

Covenant is back in action next Thursday when they host Concordia-Ann Arbor (Mich.) for a doubleheader. Game one starts at 1 p.m. on Lookout Mountain.
