GPS eighth grader Anna Shaw has been notified by the National Geographic Society that she is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2013 Tennessee National Geographic Bee to be held April 5 in Nashville. Miss Shaw’s state-level qualifying test was among the top 100.
In the GPS Geography Bee quiz that included 76 contestants from sixth through eighth grade, Miss Shaw was one of the top nine scorers with a 90 percent success rate, and she out-dueled the others in a final test, answering three of five questions correctly to be crowned the GPS champion and receive a medal from National Geographic.
The winner at the state level will participate in the National Geography Bee in May, according to faculty member Glen Vey, who oversees the GPS competition. The final round of the National Geographic Bee will be moderated by Alex Trebek and will air on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild.
