green|spaces, a Chattanooga non-profit focused on advancing sustainable building practices in the region, will host their inaugural spring fundraising event, the Floatila.

The Floatila will consist of two build days, a float down the river from Rivermont Park to Coolidge Park, and culminate in an after party at Outdoor Chattanooga. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. on May 18 at Rivermont and the float will begin at 11 a.m. Registration is $20 per person before the event, and $30 day of.

A team can be a single floater or up to eight people, and every craft must have a paddle, a 20 foot tow rope, and all participants must wear a personal flotation device.

The after party will be held from 3-5 p.m. Several awards will be given out including “Most Challenged Boat” and “Best Boat Using Repurposed Material.” Urban Stack will cater the event, beer will be provided by Big River, and Lon Eldridge will provide entertainment.

As an added bonus after the awards ceremony, participants who want to continue on to Beer Over Dirt will receive $5 off entry and folks with Beer Over Dirt tickets will receive $5 off Floatila registration.

green|spaces is partnering with Outdoor Adventure Rafting and The American Institute of Architects for the event. OAR will provide rafts, paddles, and PFDs to rent. The AIA will be coordinating build days on May 11 and the morning before the float at Rivermont Park near the boat ramp. AIA volunteers will be onsite to help anyone who wants to come and seek advice on building their raft or just wants company while building.

Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem. The boat blocks the view of and from the prettiest park in our town. The crew take many of the parking spots around the park leaving families to park across Frazier and schlep their kids, strollers and picnics to the park. You don't get fireworks ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Aimee Gets New Hands

Aimee Copeland reached for a potato chip and, with a pretty smile, popped it into her mouth and crunched it up. It sounds like nothing but it was an incredible “God moment” just one year after her bout with necrotizing fasciitis capitated the world and left a beautiful young woman with no hands, her left leg removed on one side and a right foot amputated on another. Last May ... (click for more)
