Red Bank's Phillips Chooses Covenant

All-star Catcher Still Recovering From Knee Surgery

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Still awaiting his recovery from knee surgery, Red Bank all-star catcher Tyler Phillips did not feel a need to wait any longer on choosing a college. Phillips e-mailed members of the media this week that he had accepted an academic scholarship to Covenant College and would continue his baseball career with the Division III Scots.

Phillips, injured during football season, is hopeful of being cleared to hit at the end of the month, but his role will be markedly different than 2012.

"I will be able to play this season but I will not be able to do any of the catching duties," Phillips said in his statement. "That is a tough one for me but definitely a learning experience. I have been able up to this point to work with the younger boys on the team with their hitting and I know now that I want to coach and teach later in life.

"We are told everything happens for a reason and through my injury I found Covenant, a school I would have never thought about visiting before. I have chosen to look at that as the silver lining to my injury and I know that that is where God wants me to be."

Covenant, coached by former major league pitcher Doug Simons, is currently a Division III program that is a member of the NCCAA and the Great South Conference.

Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
