Most East Ridge Residents Paying Garbage Fee

  • Thursday, March 14, 2013

Officials in the trustee's office said most East Ridge residents are paying a new $180 garbage fee that went out with the property tax notices.

Susan Bedwell said 9,023 have been billed and 7,831 are paid.

She said collections thus far total $1,302,848.

East Ridge officials said earlier they needed to collect $1.4 million to cover the cost of the service.

Ms. Bedwell said there was some confusion with mortgage companies over the new fee. She said some inadvertently did not pay, but after being notified they all have except one. She said that one firm is in the process of paying.

She said some letters went out to East Ridge residents in cases where the mortgage company had not paid. She said in some cases the residents and the mortgage company both wound up paying. In those cases, there were refunds made, she said.

East Ridge officials earlier had expressd concerns about what payment rate they might get on the sanitation fee.

The charge was formerly included in the water bill, but the Tennessee-American Water Company stopped such billings for municipalities.
