Nicole Sims, a senior at Sale Creek High School was named the winner of the 61st Chattanooga Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Thursday evening at UTC as female students swept the top awards.
Miss Sims' winning project was on grapefruit seed extraction, and she, along with second place finisher Darby Schumacher, of The Baylor School, won all expense paid trips to compete at The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair at Phoenix in June along with numerous scholarships. The third place winner was GPS' Anjali Chandra.
The Junior Division Sweepstakes winners were Bailey Bohannon of Boyd-Buchanan, Emily Vardumian who is homeschooled and Carlisha McKenzie of the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.
Two-time Junior Champion and Miss Chattanooga 2013 Dacey Winkleman who is a senior in the UTC Honors Program majoring in Molecular Biology and Chemistry, was among the speakers and assisted in presenting the awards.
